08+ center console fix
« on: May 30, 2012, 02:21:36 PM »
Anyone have one?

The lid won't stay shut (as I knew in advance) and it is apparently a known issue.

I haven't done any research yet at all, but figured someone on here has dealt with it and might have some insight.

Thanks - Jon

I've had zero issues with mine.
The only time it won't latch is when my aux input cable is in the way.

That doesn't help.

I'm not familiar with the issue, but on my car was able to take apart the latching mechanism and sand it down, enlarge the holes used for mounting and shift the whole thing backwards. I assume that yours is similar to mine, just spring loaded?

alternatively, 3gwrx says

Quote from: johnsheehan20;3337620

You will Start by removing these screws. And just a FYI all of the screw you will remove during this process are not identical. You may want to keep them organized so you don't mix them up!

Then remove this screw.

Then from the back seat remove this access plate on the end of the console and remove this screw. Then remove this entire end of the console.

Then remove these 3 screws to remove the hinge from the car.

Here is a top view of the hinge and the direction you should squeeze it.

And Finally a side view showing the U shape i was talking about. You will apply pressure at the highlighted lines and you will push in the direction of the arrows. You will only want to bend this slightly, maybe an 1/8" to start. Put it back together and as long as you bent it enough (but not too much) your lid should latch securely and you should even get that audible sound when it latches. Hope this was detailed enough for ya! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Perhaps get the EDM armrest extender/storage box? iwsti just had a group buy on it. Perhaps we can get another one going? I'm pretty sure this one fits the 4th gen Legacy too, but I'd have to confirm before committing.

the bottom line is this, people just need to realize that when they buy cheap CO's [KW on down], they are buying cheap, poorly engineered shocks for the sake of having height adjust-ability. - whitetiger on legacygt.com

I'll just take it to the dealer and see what they say. May research on nasioc too.

I don't want an extension at this time.

I did this tonight, it works just like described. I couldn't be happier!!! :D :D

Now to address my loud exhaust and bumpy suspension woes.

Just an update. The problem has slowly come back now. I'm planning to do this 'tweak' again this weekend, but if it doesn't last, then I'm going to have to come up with something else.

It's super easy. Try it. It may last longer for you, idk.

The design of the center console latch system is very poor.

I've been having this exact same problem with my '11. I've taken it apart three times and adjusted the bracket without much success. The last time I had it apart, I was examining the bottom piece of the arm rest and noticed that the plastic piece which covers the bracket seemed like it was hitting on something when the arm rest closed. This caused it to shift forward which in turn caused the latch to barely catch. I may take it apart again this weekend and investigate it further.

Just wanted to give an update on my attempt to fix this problem.

Over the long weekend, I took the metal hinge and really bent it using a bench vise (based on the pics from the writeup in an earlier post). In my first attempts at fixing this I was only bending it by hand, and was not able to bend it enough to solve the problem. After doing this, the piece which connects to the lid was bent more upward, so I bent it down some in order to keep the lid parallel to the rest of the console. Anyway, long story short, the latch on the lid clicks when I close it, and it stays closed.

Hopefully this is the last time I have to take everything apart, but I will keep an eye on it to see if it reverts back to the way it was.

mine has started poping up again... hoping a little more bend will hold this time.

I definitely had to bend that bracket a lot in order to get the lid to latch properly.

Just chiming in, that it is still working well w/o issues after some time now.

My next task is fixing the creaking A pillars and trying to resolve the rattle from the rear hatch.  I"ve tracked the source of the pillar noise down, just have to decide how I'm going to go about fixing it.

Decided against taking it to the dealer for warranty, for fear they will do a hack job like was done on the center console when the previous owner had it in for the issue I resolved above.

If I wasn't afraid of a dealer ripping apart my interior to fix the A-pillar/dash thing, I woulda taken it in some time ago.

I was debating putting a bit of something between the A pillar and where it tucks into the dash. I've found that if I press down on the grey trim piece it will stop for a while.

If you find a fix for it (or the hatch thing) I'd buy you many beers of thanks.

I have a hatch rattle as well.
When I raise the hatch it sounds like there is a bolt or nut rattling around within the plastic trim pieces.
The grab handle is also loose and has a slight rattle to it.

Need some spare time to tackle some of these minor but annoying issues.

Kevin, Thinking the hatch rattle might be one of the tabs, or receivers for the tabs holding interior plastics that has come loose and could be flying around in there.  Haven't had your exact vehicle apart, but been down this road before with different causes.

I've got a dash rattle in my Legacy 3.0R in the colder temps only.  Haven't decided to dive into that one.
