Recommend me: transmission fluid
« on: July 03, 2012, 04:27:30 PM »
Car is at 114k miles, I've got no maintenance records, but it technically should be up soon, every 30k right? Its a 5spd wrx. What is the preferred brand and weight for our extreme climate?

I'd prefer not to go with a hand blend like Scotty's

Personal recommendation: 2 parts ShockProof Lightweight, 1 part ShockProof Superlight.

Doesn't the WRX trans have a 3.8 qt capacity? How would I do two parts and one part nicely?

Estimate it.  It's not a science experiment waiting to blow up.

Math!

3.8 * 2/3 = 2.5334
3.8 * 1/3 = 1.2667

So then I'd have ~1.2 quarts of oil sitting around for years...

Is the andrewtech solution pretty good? Any complaints against it? Any noticeable downsides? What about the part on redlines website that says don't use shockproof with pumps, coolers, etc as it can clog it?

Well I'll be....
This is what, 6th grad stuff these days?  :P

I'd recommend Motul Gear300. Some have had good success with the Red Line Shockproof and some call it ShockPOOF.
There is a good thread on here somewhere about what transmission fluid to run.
As far as weight go with the recommended weight. 75W-90

There are a few I know running SP in there WRX. I'm running it in my SHO and it's the best shifting I've had.

Not sure what I ended up going with, Either Valvoline or Mobile 1 full synthetic at 75w90.

The frustrating part was the guy at advanced auto said that I didn't need that kind of oil. I told him that if he wasn't willing to go in the back and find more of what I was looking to buy then I had no business buying from him.

Napa hooked me up.

Thanks everyone for the help. For those who have yet to attempt this, get a funnel with a hose, they are $5 and rock.

In the end, this greatly decreased my gear deceleration noise. I know most people say "ah, yeah, I've got that" But I had it bad, either too thing of fluid, or old broken down fluid was causing it to scream on deceleration instead of just whir and vibrate. Everything is now more normal then it was.

I have gear deceleration noise as well.  Hopefully changing it next week.

EDIT: nevermind, after further research I only seem to have the noise in 2nd gear, which looks to be a common subaru quirk.  Still changing gear oil though.

Subaru Extra-S! Go with what Subaru intended for the car. Before changing mine, I spent many hours researching what to go with and you can't beat it! I bought mine from 42Autosports but I'm sure you can find other vendors on nasioc.
