Winter wheel/tire suggestions for 2013 sti
« on: August 11, 2013, 10:54:40 PM »
Hey everyone,

I am driving a 2013 sti 4-door. The stock wheels and tires are amazing in warm weather but the few times I drove them in the snow last winter they were absolutely horrible.  Anyone know a good place in Omaha to shop around for a good winter set?

Discount Tire. Currently at 76ish and cass. Building 3 other ones around town. Please don't drive on the summer tires in the snow. We've had members on here wreck their rides doing that.
the bottom line is this, people just need to realize that when they buy cheap CO's [KW on down], they are buying cheap, poorly engineered shocks for the sake of having height adjust-ability. - whitetiger on legacygt.com

Yikes summer tires in winter!  Nevermind the snow, anything <40 degrees would be like driving with glass on asphalt.

I run General Altimax Arctic. They are cheap, but I couldnt have asked for a better tire in the snow. I felt I couldnt even have fun when I wanted to! I was recommended to use them by a member here and I have to continue to recommend them for others.

If you want the good tires, go for Blizzaks. They are pricey though. For winter wheels, I went with 05 STI wheels. Got them cheap and powder coated them black.

Totally agree with this, these tires are simply amazing at snow, water, and ice for what they cost.

Those are the go-to for winter tires, but winters here are mostly spent driving in salt water (melted snow). The Blizzaks really fall down when it comes to wet performance and traction.

I'd find some dedicated rims and run some specific snows. Or, perhaps you should use snows on your stockers and use them as an excuse to get new fancy rims. There's a helpful thread linking to the many other discussions we've tossed around in the past.

I had some performance winter tires, alpine PA3s last year. This year I'm going with winter 3ds. Performance winter tires are the way to go. They hold up great on cold dry roads too. I had no trouble with 10 inches of snow. I got mine on tire rack shipped to the door for pretty cheap.

No Snow!   Well maybe like 3-4 inches once....anymore after that is just an inconvenience.  Snow sucks.

Snow rules!  I can't wait for it to dump a foot of traffic-stopping power-outage-enducing white stuff.

But that's the New Hampshire childhood coming through.

Careful Mike lol...I want it to snow often, but anymore than 7-10 inches (maybe a 1-1.5 ft of fluffy stuff) and we'll just get high centered =0

The snow line is close!  But, even if it does snow, this one won't stick :sadbanana

At the top of this section of the forum there are threads dedicated to winter tires.  The options are pretty much the same, just need to decide your budget and size/width that you would like.  ;)

I have had General Altimax Artic's on my last two Subaru's for winter.  And last season's 75" had nothing on those tires!  Yes, I live in Wisconsin now, so these tires are even more appreciated...

Ive ran the Generals, as well as Hankooks, Dunlop's, and Blizzak's.  Of all of these my opinion is that the Generals and Dunlop Winter Sports have been my favorite.  They both did the best in all winter conditions.  I had the Dunlops on my 285whp WRX and they were awesome!  No issues and I was hitting unplowed streets.  With that said, we have also run the Generals.  The wife used to drive to peoples homes in rural Iowa areas that didnt get plowed, and she never had any issues even in her slow Rav4.  Solid tires.
