Air Compressor Recommendations?
« on: January 16, 2014, 12:57:52 AM »
This summer, I plan on doing some work and I'm using that as an excuse to buy a larger air compressor! I'm thinking around 25-30 gal air compressor, but my understanding is the motor (being able to keep up with the tools) is more important than the tank capacity.

1) I don't plan on doing any painting
2) I want to be able to use impacts, air ratchets, air hammers, etc. with little to no problems
3) noise is not the biggest concern but I wouldnt mind buying oil compressor to reduce excessive noise

Does anyone have any input or recommendations from their previous purchases or maybe you really liked a friends compressor? Any shared experience/advice would be greatly appreciated...

The particular model we've got is outdated by now, but from glancing at similar looking ones it's about like the 165 psi, 33 gallon Craftsman on the Sears page.  Pretty loud but manageable, enough air for my 425 ft./lb. impact to run on the highest setting for several minutes without kicking on.  Decently sized for a home application.

So a1.8 motor?

Right now I'm leaning towards the 21 gal 2.5hp harbor freight oil compressor for price, motor size and oil being quieter. Only concern is tank is only 21 gal and the reviews are 3/5 star...  :-\

Thanks for the input. Sad to see nobody else chiming in. I might just gamble on the HF 21gal 2.5 HP compressor. it may turn itself on alot more but I think it should be quieter (oil compressor) and able to fill quicker.

HP and PSI are not the only factors in a compressor keeping up with an air tool that sucks SCFM...

Look at the usable ratings for 90 PSI airflow (SCFM)  This #, (Higher being better output...) is one of the first things to look at when selecting a compressor to suit your needs.
