'15 Spring Fling Planning
« on: January 16, 2015, 06:09:35 PM »
It's a 50 degree day in January right now.  Perhaps it was the fact that today felt like spring... but I thought we should start pooling ideas for a Spring meet.

IMG_3920 by 86Reverend, on Flickr

The last few "seasonal" meets have simply been big-turnout cruises, but I thought maybe we could use this time to put something more together.  Cookout, pot-luck, car show, there's a bunch of things we could do.  I figure this is the perfect time to get ideas moving so we can put something big together!  What would YOU like to do?

I would like to have a car that is capable of actually partaking in the cruise this time.   ;D

It would be great to try to do food again. Was fun to sit and just chat with people.

Food is always a great idea.  I think a grill out would be fun.

The itch is getting to me...  I hate winter.  As long as it's not right at the beginning of spring so they can clean the roads a bit, I'm game.  I think if we could end somewhere away from people and with some space, it'd be nice to do a BBQ.

I have always wanted to do a BBQ here (16614 I-680 Honey Creek, IA 51542), but we would have to provide our own it may appear.

That looks like it would be a great place to end a cruise.   Somewhere out of the way is good so those of us with louder exhausts don't appear disruptive.

I am curious what time of day we should start this cruise.  I am a fan of doing the cruises in the afternoon having them end around the time the sun is going down.  We could have a grillout at dusk as long was we were in a decently lit area.

We could probably pursue getting permission from the State to takeover that area. Its the 680 scenic overlook, correct? Have one or two people bring a grill, do a potluck style thing so there will be tons of food and drinks. If we can use the whole place then there will be parking, I'd just hate to get shooed off half-way through our BBQ by some friendly Iowa patrol officers.

I agree that permission to use the area would be best.  Who would we need to contact?

That'd be a good location too since it's right off one of my favorite asphalt cruise routes.  We could use that as an ending point and BBQ it up!

Possibly the Iowa DOT or perhaps the sheriff's office would know who to contact exactly.

What time of year would be best for this?  On the one hand, Spring can be pretty... but on the other, I'm not sure if the sand used in the winter will be cleared yet.  It'd be nice to have the roads in good condition to get a big group together.

Cruise and a BBQ sounds like the gameplan, though.  Can someone who lives in that area check out the site and look into what we need to do (if anything) to secure that location?

I would say the middle of May would be a perfect time for the event!

With this many people, might be a huge pain to actually cook for a group. Especially a group that is as..well...noncommittal as we all tend to be.

Happen to know a few members around here are hooked into food service. Maybe we can do a catering type thing with tickets so we can have a solid food option.

That might be a good solution.  The "yes I'm coming" folks who don't ever show plus the people who don't say they're coming but actually do... sometimes it balances out at events though.

Any progress on this? It's getting warm!

Hopefully my turbo kit has been delivered by then, or I'll be driving a Honda with a strong potential of butt-hurt.  :p

Yeah, I think this warm-up weather is a cue for this cruise.  Still a lot of salt and gravel on the roads, but now's the time to check out locations and get approvals (if needed) and get a date that would work nailed down.

Any ideas on a weekend to do this in April or May?

May is preferable so that I can actually try to make it. Ordering those summer tires today though!

Gonna set the Spring Fling for May 3rd.  Still need to plan out the details for food and a place to eat together, but I figured we could at least set a date and start aiming for that.

Cruise Route would likely be similar to the Loess Hills or even the Iowaska route we've done before since there are some good cookout locations along those routes.

On the one hand, we've already got 30+ people signed up for it.  On the other, if we moved it a week later, would this work better for some on here?

I've had a few veterans mention that they're busy on the 3rd

I pretty much work all weekends so I'm out regardless. I had to request the 3rd off to run the race so those plans aren't changing  ;)

A week later might work well for me. Going to try and make it regardless though.

A week would be better for me, however, I haven't looked at my schedule for the following weekend.  I just know I have to play military that weekend.
