Pilot bearing?
« on: July 28, 2015, 07:08:11 AM »
Got my new clutch in.  and lwfw.  strange noise when clutch is not engaged and/or gas pedal not depressed.  like a grinding.  doing the front tires 4psi higher than rears helps a little.  is this just how lwfw's sound or could my pilot bearing be bad? how many hours for pilot bearing replacement?

If it goes away when you push the clutch in, it is likely the throwout bearing.  It's not uncommon to have a noisy TOB.

Does it stop if you press on the clutch pedal lightly?

yes, clutch or gas pedal pressed lightly will stop the sound.

Definitely sounds like the throw-out bearing. Mine is doing the exact same thing. It was really noticeable after my last track day and has since quieted back down somehow.

do you think adjusting the clutch pedal could help a bit?

I'm not sure on that... I know that when they start to make noise it's a warning that they're going bad. Eventually it will become hard to push the clutch and there will be binding or sticking. Plus it'll make a mess of the trans input snout.

Adjusting the clutch pedal will not do anything and some TOB's just make noise.  Run it 'till it doesn't work anymore.
